NPRW: Nigeria’s Blue Economy Requires Effective Communication, Says PR Expert
Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has emphasized the need for a clear communication strategy in developing Nigeria’s Blue Economy.
This call was made during the maiden Nigeria Public Relations Week (NPRW). Dr. Ibietan who. Is also a scholar in digital communication stressed that effective communication is crucial for building trust, promoting social cohesion, and attracting investment.
The Blue Economy refers to economic activities related to oceans, seas, and coasts. Dr. Ibietan advocated for multi-stakeholder collaboration, education, and upskilling of communication professionals in the sector.

While emphasizing the importance of communication in harnessing the blue economy’s potential, he said the strategy should also address the needs of rural communities and those without internet access.
According communication stakeholders including NIPR, NUJ, and ARCON should all be involved in developing the Blue Economy strategy.
He also highlighted major challenges facing the Blue Economy, including climate change, pollution, sea piracy, militancy, arms trafficking, destruction of maritime ecosystems, over-exploitation of marine resources, and disregard for environmental regulations.
By addressing these challenges through effective communication and collaboration, Nigeria can harness the vast potential of its Blue Economy to create jobs and significantly contribute to the nation’s GDP.”
