Build Modern Correctional Facilities to Tackle Prisonbreaks – Reps urge State Govts
The House of Representatives has urged the 36 states of the federation to build modern correctional services in order to forestall jailbreaks in the country.
The Chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Rep. Chinedu Ogah, said this yesterday when the committee visited the Correctional Centre in Suleja to inspect the damage caused by the rain that led to the jailbreak at the facility.

He called for adequate provisions for the inmates saying, “The little token that is used to feed inmates is not enough; we need to take care of the Correction centres.
“The 1999 Constitution, as amended, has shifted correctional service to concurrent; therefore, all the governments of the 36 states must implement that law by building correctional centres.”
He said that due to the weakness of the correctional centre, it fell because of a little force from the wind following a rainfall.
He also said it was unexplainable that a little above 400 inmates were being taken care of by just five armed men, adding that such an arrangement would not work.
The committee appealed to the president to recruit more personnel for the country’s Correctional Service.
