Hajj 2024: Mecca Hit by Heavy Rainfall After Scorching Heatwave

In a dramatic turn of events, heavy rainfall descended upon Mecca on Monday afternoon, bringing relief to over a million Muslim pilgrims who had been enduring a severe heatwave during the annual Hajj religious rite.

The rainfall came as a welcome respite after temperatures soared to a sweltering 46°C (119°F) in the Mina shade, with the Saudi weather service reporting a record high of 51.8°C (125°F) at the Grand Mosque.

PRNigeria reports that despite the challenges posed by the extreme heat, pilgrims from around the world, including a large contingent from Nigeria, remained steadfast in their devotion, completing the final stages of the Hajj with determination and faith.

The Saudi health ministry reported 2,764 cases of heat exhaustion on Sunday, underscoring the importance of taking necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. In response, the ministry issued guidelines urging pilgrims to seek shade, drink plenty of water, and use umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun.

This year’s Hajj has seen a significant turnout, with over 1.8 million pilgrims from more than 90 countries participating in the sacred ritual. The Saudi royal family, led by King Salman Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, has ensured the provision of adequate security, logistics, and services to ensure the success of the pilgrimage.

In a heartfelt message, the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Jalal Ahmad Arabi, congratulated pilgrims and stakeholders on the occasion, highlighting the significance of Hajj as a symbol of unity, piety, and obedience. Despite challenges, NAHCON remains committed to delivering exceptional services and prioritizing pilgrimage-centrism, Arabi said.”
