UPDATE: Deadly Series of Bomb Blasts Rock Gwoza, Scores Killed

MA tragic series of bomb blasts rocked the town of Gwoza, Borno State, on June 29th, 2024, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.

According to Barkindo M Saidu, the Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the first blast occurred at around 3 pm, when a female suicide bomber detonated herself amidst a marriage ceremony celebration. The explosion affected more than 30 people, resulting in various levels of injuries and instant fatalities.

Just minutes later, another blast occurred near the General Hospital, further adding to the chaos and casualties. Tragedy struck again during the funeral services (janaiza), as another female suicide bomber rushed into the congregation and detonated another explosive, causing a significant number of casualties.

As the rescue efforts were underway at the hospital, a fourth blast occurred, this time from a female teenage suicide bomber, further compounding the emergency situation.

In total, Saidu reported that 18 people, comprising children, adult males, females, and pregnant women, have been confirmed dead as a result of the heinous attacks. An additional 19 seriously injured victims were evacuated to Maiduguri, the state capital, while 23 others await military escort to the Medical Regimental Services (MRS) Clinic in Gwoza.

Saidu, who is on the ground in Gwoza, is now coordinating the emergency response, including the mobilization of additional drugs to complement the shortage in the affected area. The injuries sustained by the victims range from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures.

Furthermore, there is a report of a suspected suicide bomber in the nearby town of Pulka, adding to the overall sense of unease and heightened security concerns in the region.

The series of bomb blasts has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges faced by the people of Borno State, who have endured years of violence and instability due to the activities of insurgent groups. The authorities have vowed to investigate the incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice, while providing support and assistance to the affected communities.
