NIPR, NUJ Task Information Managers on “Responsible Reporting” for National Security

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, (NIPR) and Nigerian Union of Journalists, (NUJ) have advised communication managers to eschew disseminating information capable of undermining national security.

National Presidents of the NIPR and NUJ, Dr. Ike Neliaku and Dr. Chris Isiguzo gave the appeal at a one-day capacity building training on “Renewing Hope and Strengthening of National Unity Through Effective Communication”, in Abuja.

The training organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, BPSR, in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was themed: “The Role of the Official Secrets Act in Maintaining Confidentiality and National Security”.

In his goodwill message at the event, Dr. Neliaku, lamented the rising spate of violent communication, which he said is threatening the nation’s peace, development and social cohesion.

“For you to become professional communicators and information managers you need to be skilled and certified. And that is why I am urging you to register and become members of NIPR.

“You cannot discharge your jobs well without having the requisite knowledge of how to communicate effectively. And this of course, can affect your organisation, implementation of government policies and effective service delivery to citizens,” he said.

On his part, Dr. Isiguzo noted that the balance between transparency and confidentiality has become delicate, in an era where information flows freely and rapidly.

“As communication managers, you are entrusted with the critical responsibility of safeguarding sensitive information while ensuring that the public remains well-informed.

“The Official Secrets Acts play a vital role in maintaining this balance. They provide a legal framework that protects national security by ensuring that classified information is handled with the utmost care and discretion.

“Understanding and adhering to these acts is essential for maintaining the integrity of our institutions and protecting the nation’s interests,” he said.

The NUJ President explained that though the Nigerian media relies on the free flow of information, it also understands the need for responsible reporting that respects national security.

He said: “By strengthening the skills of communication managers in navigating the complexities of confidentiality, we are also reinforcing the foundations of a robust and secure democratic society”.
