U.S. Mayors President Lauds Moroccan City Development Initiatives in the Sahara

In a recent visit, Andrew Ginther, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, praised the visionary leadership of King Mohammed VI in prioritizing urban development in Morocco, particularly in the Saharan regions.

“The wisdom of His Majesty to concentrate efforts on the cities of Morocco, especially in the Sahara, is truly exemplary,” Ginther stated during a press briefing following his meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, in the capital.

This delegation of American mayors is visiting Morocco as part of twinning agreements that link the U.S. cities of Arlington and Columbus with the Moroccan cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, respectively. Ginther, who also serves as the Mayor of Columbus, Ohio, expressed optimism about witnessing the progress achieved under King Mohammed VI’s guidance. “This visit offers a unique opportunity to see firsthand the advancements in Morocco’s cities,” he remarked.

As part of their agenda, Ginther announced plans to sign two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the cities of Dakhla and Laayoune during their time in the Moroccan Sahara. He reiterated the U.S.’s official recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region, stating his eagerness to engage with local officials to discuss the Autonomy Plan and explore avenues for collaboration.

During discussions with Bourita, the U.S. delegation emphasized the critical nature of local cooperation and development in fostering strategic ties. Ginther highlighted that Morocco, recognized as “America’s oldest friend,” plays a pivotal role in reinforcing the bilateral relationship. He asserted, “Promoting cooperation is essential for strengthening our ties and for developing innovative, community-driven solutions to shared challenges.”

In alignment with these sentiments, Jim Ross, Mayor of Arlington, Texas, underscored the importance of nurturing the foundational relationship between the United States and Morocco. “These relationships give us an opportunity to grow stronger together. That’s the essence of our mission at the U.S. Conference of Mayors,” Ross stated.

This visit marks a significant step forward in fostering international collaboration and community development between the two nations.
