Troops bust kidnapping syndicate, arrest 12, recover weapons in Taraba

In a major security success, troops from the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have apprehended 12 suspected kidnappers and recovered 14 motorcycles, a locally made pistol, and two bags of Indian hemp during recent operations in Taraba State.

The operation, which began after a distress call from residents of Chachanji village, highlights the Army’s rapid response capabilities and ongoing commitment to community safety.

On November 7, 2024, the Nigerian Army received an urgent call from Chachanji residents following the abduction of two individuals by a group of about 10 armed men on motorcycles.

Troops swiftly launched a rescue operation, engaging with the kidnappers. The suspects, outgunned, retreated into the bush, leaving behind a pistol and bags of Indian hemp as they fled. This initial operation not only disrupted the kidnappers’ activities but also secured the area to prevent further criminal actions.

Building on credible intelligence, troops carried out a follow-up operation on November 9, targeting a local drinking joint in Mbhakyir village near Agu Center. During this raid, 12 suspects were arrested, and 14 motorcycles were seized.

Under intense questioning, the suspects admitted to their involvement in recent kidnappings and identified their leader as Veior John Gata, a well-known figure wanted for multiple crimes in southern Taraba and Benue states.

The suspects disclosed that Gata had previously met with them at Agu Center on November 5, before the recent attacks in Chachanji, which included the killing of two locals and the abduction of others on November 6 and 7. The suspects revealed that Gata had specifically targeted Chachanji’s market, aiming to instill fear among the community to disrupt local commerce.

The Nigerian Army has commended the cooperation of residents in providing timely information, which proved instrumental in the successful operation. The 6 Brigade assured the public of its continued dedication to security and urged citizens to stay vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity to authorities.

Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, expressed gratitude for the support of the community and reinforced the Army’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.
