Historic Feat: NIDOA Brings Nigerians in Diaspora Together

In a landmark development, the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Americas (NIDOA) has achieved a historic unification, bringing together previously divided factions under one cohesive umbrella. The breakthrough was finalized during the extraordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on November 16, 2024, in Bloomington, Minnesota, under the theme, *“NIDOA: Building a Strong & United Nigerian Diaspora Community.”*

For the first time in years, representatives from NIDOA chapters across the Americas—including over 20 chapter presidents from the United States, along with continental chairs from Canada and Brazil—engaged in constructive dialogue to resolve long-standing divisions. This pivotal moment followed months of mediation and collaboration, culminating in a unified vision for the future of the organization.

An international mediation expert played a crucial role in facilitating the discussions, employing restorative practices to address past conflicts and foster unity. As part of the agreement, a dedicated conflict resolution arm will be established within NIDOA to handle disputes collaboratively, ensuring sustainable harmony in the future.

Key leaders from both sides, including Mr. Zee Nagberi, Mr. Bukola Olaoye, Dr. Toni Ogbanufe, Mr. Uche Uzoigwe, Pastor Doyin Owobamirin, and Mr. Collins Ikegwuonu, signed the historic agreement, paving the way for NIDOA’s unified future.

The organization now stands stronger, with an enhanced ability to advocate for Nigerians in the Diaspora and implement impactful projects. Plans for the next AGM in 2025 are already underway, with Columbus, Ohio, set to host the event. A unified leadership body is expected to be elected to steer NIDOA into this new era.

The AGM in Bloomington attracted prominent political and community leaders, including Mrs. Esther Agbaje, Assistant Majority Leader in the Minnesota House of Representatives and the first Nigerian American elected to the body. Mrs. Agbaje welcomed delegates warmly and commended NIDOA for its successful unification efforts.

Past leaders of NIDOA also contributed their support, participating both in person and virtually. Notable figures included Mr. Ganiyu Dada, Dr. Ndubuisi George, Chief Afolayan, Barr. Samuel Adewusi, Mr. Isaac Inyang, Dr. Kazeem Bello, Mrs. Patience Key, and Rev. Emmanuel Igwe.

With this unification, NIDOA is poised to strengthen connections between Nigeria and its Diaspora, advocate for policies affecting Nigerian communities worldwide, and embark on a new chapter of collective success. As one united body, NIDOA is ready to amplify its impact, both at home and abroad.
