Garba Shehu: The Media Maestro at 65

Mallam Garba Shehu,Nigeria’s reference of diligence, mentorship, and a lifetime dedication to shaping Nigeria’s media landscape is a year older. At 65, the unassuming, soft-spoken media strategist continues to leave a legacy that resonates across Nigeria’s socio-political zones. Behind his quiet demeanor lies a powerhouse of influence, an expansive network, and unparalleled contributions to journalism and media management in Nigeria.

Mallam Garba Shehu’s journey in the media began in 1982 as a correspondent at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Sokoto. His early reporting days offered him a front-row seat to Nigeria’s intricate socio-political dynamics. In 1984, as an energy correspondent for NTA Network News Lagos, his incisive reporting captured both local and national issues, earning him recognition among peers and seniors alike.

At just 33 years old, Shehu became the Managing Director of the Triumph Newspaper, a publication that played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion in northern Nigeria. By 37, he had risen to the prestigious position of President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, cementing his status as a leader in the media industry. His tenure in these roles highlighted his commitment to journalistic integrity, mentorship, and innovation.

Garba Shehu’s career transcended journalism when he became the spokesman for two of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures—former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Muhammadu Buhari. As Atiku’s media adviser, he skillfully managed communications, earning a reputation for clarity and diplomacy.
