Effective Communication Will Tackle Nigeria’s Leadership Crisis – NIPR

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has identified the lack of effective communication strategies as a key reason for Nigeria’s persistent leadership challenges.

The President and Chairman of the Institute’s Governing Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, stated this at the 2024 Annual Conference of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the NIPR.

Speaking at the event themed “Leadership and Economic Transformation,” Dr. Neliaku emphasized that the current crop of Nigerian leaders, like their predecessors, will continue to struggle with effective governance if they fail to adopt strategic communication practices.

He remarked: “We have seen how nations that understand the value of communication continue to prioritize it. They continually engage communication experts to guide, lead, and direct them.

“These experts know the right things to say and the best timing for their messages. This is the essence of strategic communication. But in our case, we have leaders who may know what to say but lack the understanding of how to say it effectively.”

Dr. Neliaku also highlighted the establishment of the NIPR’s University of Public Relations and Leadership, which is set to commence academic activities in 2026.

He noted that the institution would equip future leaders with skills in strategic communication and public relations, enabling them to navigate the complexities of leadership in an ever-changing world.

“The curriculum, developed in collaboration with international experts, will ensure that graduates are globally competitive and highly sought after,” he explained.

Dr. Neliaku urged Nigerians to acknowledge the transformative power of public relations and communication in shaping leadership and societal progress.

“Public relations is not just a profession; it is a calling to create meaningful connections and lasting impact,” he said.
