From Blueprints to Bylines: My Journey from Engineer to Communicator

As an engineer, I never imagined myself navigating the vibrant world of communication. My background in science and technology prepared me for a world of technical precision, but storytelling and public engagement were foreign territories. That changed dramatically during my experience with the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship—a transformative journey that reshaped my career and expanded my horizons.

The fellowship became a pivotal chapter in my professional life, steering me from the confines of wires and equations to the boundless possibilities of words and narratives. Over the course of two intense weeks, I transitioned from an engineer with limited communication exposure into a confident storyteller, seamlessly blending technical expertise with the art of impactful messaging.

From Theory to Real-World Impact

The program’s unique structure—a synergy of theoretical knowledge and practical application—stood out from the very beginning. Each session was led by facilitators who were masters of their craft, blending wisdom, experience, and actionable insights.

Dr. Sule Yau Sule, former spokesperson to two Kano governors, captivated us with his engaging anecdotes and incisive analysis of public and private sector communication dynamics. His sessions provided not just theoretical lessons but also practical blueprints for navigating complex communication challenges.

Other facilitators brought equally transformative insights. Mr. Abdulsalam Mahmud’s sessions on news writing turned daunting concepts into approachable and actionable skills. Salis Manaja’s training in multimedia and camera handling elevated our ability to tell visually compelling stories. Mr. MD Lawal’s fact-checking masterclass sharpened our analytical thinking, while Mr. Ali Isah’s groundbreaking session on artificial intelligence showcased how AI could revolutionize content creation and analysis.

As a team leader, I had the privilege of putting my newfound skills into action during a community project in Jakara, Kano. This initiative focused on addressing environmental waste management—a critical issue in the community. Through collaboration, dedication, and clear communication, my team and I were able to make a tangible impact. The experience underscored how engineering logic, when combined with storytelling, can drive meaningful social change.

Unearthing a Hidden Talent

Before the fellowship, writing felt like uncharted territory. However, the program unearthed a hidden talent I never knew I had. Today, I am proud to have authored and published multiple articles on topics ranging from the bustling Maigatari Market in Jigawa to the complexities of minimum wage debates. These achievements are a direct result of the fellowship’s transformative approach to skill-building and its ability to inspire confidence in its participants.

Outstanding Achievement

Graduating as one of the two best fellows of the program was a moment of immense pride. The recognition came with a prestigious award that included a cash prize, sponsorship for registration with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), and the exceptional opportunity to work with the State Government House on public relations. This milestone not only validated my hard work but also motivated me to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in communication.

A Journey Worth Taking

The PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship has profoundly shaped my personal and professional journey. It boosted my confidence, expanded my skill set, and ignited a passion for storytelling that perfectly complements my engineering background. For this, I owe immense gratitude to Alhaji Yushau Shuaib and the entire IMPR team for their vision, guidance, and unwavering support.

To aspiring communication professionals, I cannot recommend this fellowship enough. It is more than just a program—it is a journey of discovery, growth, and transformation. For anyone looking to elevate their craft, expand their network, and embark on a path of lifelong learning, the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship is the perfect launchpad.
