Climate Change: FG Colloborates with Research Institutes
The Federal Government will collaborate with relevant research institutes in the country in undertaking an assessment under the National Talanoa Dialogue on climate action towards harvesting and galvanizing national climatic action with the UN framework on climatic change.
Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril who made the statement in Abuja disclosed that his ministry will commence work with Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) Centre for Policy Research and Development Solutions (CPRDS) and Institute for Public Policy Analysis and Management (IPPAM) towards national, regional and global actions on climate change.
This, according to him, “is pursuant to the mandated process requested by parties to the UN framework convention on climatic change to take stock of collective effort to reduce emissions as well as build greater resilience.
“It is in line with the long term goals of the Paris Agreement and to prepare updated or new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).”
He further stated the Talanoa Dialogue which related to countries’ efforts to combat climatic change focuses on “where we are, where we want to go and how to get there”, adding that at the 23rd session of conference of Parties to the UN framework convention on climatic change (COP23), parties were urged to develop National Talanoa Dialogue through the engagement of relevant stakeholders to help inform the process.
He revealed that the National Talanoa Dialogue is structured into two phases, an online Assessment phase and a National stakeholders meeting.  He further said that the online assessment tool has been primarily developed to harvest information which will be validated afterwards during the national stakeholders meeting coming up later this year in collaboration with the UNDP.
Jibril while launching the 10 day assessment tool called on all relevant stakeholders to participate in providing valuable response towards realizing the achievement of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals
It will be recalled that the Talanoa Dialogue was launched at the UN Climatic Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn last year November inviting everyone to engage in finding solutions first by preparing submissions in response to three questions- where we are, where do we want to go and how do we get there.
