Drama: As IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu Dismisses Lawyers and Disrupts Court Proceedings

In a dramatic turn of events during the resumed hearing of the case against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Kanu dismissed his legal team and took over his own defense, leading to chaotic scenes in the courtroom. The hearing, which was expected to address a motion seeking the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako from the case, took an unexpected turn as Kanu became unruly and interrupted proceedings.

The case had previously taken a significant turn on September 24 when Justice Nyako recused herself from presiding over the matter, following a directive from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. However, at today’s hearing, Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, raised concerns about why his client was summoned to court despite the judge’s withdrawal from the case. Ejimakor clarified that the defense team and Kanu were present solely to honor the court’s invitation.

In response, Justice Nyako explained that although she had withdrawn from the case and forwarded the file to the Chief Judge for reassignment, the file was returned to her with instructions to hear and rule on the pending motion for her recusal. She then directed the defense team to formally file a motion outlining the reasons for seeking her disqualification.

At this juncture, Nnamdi Kanu intervened, instructing his lawyers to “take a back seat” as he rose to address the court himself. Kanu argued that the Chief Judge lacked the authority to impose a lawyer on his case and insisted that the Chief Judge could only appeal the court order. His outburst disrupted the proceedings, as he repeatedly interrupted both his legal team and the prosecution counsel, who were attempting to secure a new date for the hearing.

Kanu also accused Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the lead prosecution counsel, of subverting the law. His conduct drew sharp criticism from observers, who noted that such behavior in other jurisdictions would likely result in charges of contempt of court and possible imprisonment, even as the substantive case continued.

Justice Nyako, visibly frustrated by the disruptions, adjourned the case *sine die* (indefinitely), leaving the matter in limbo. The incident has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians and netizens, who expressed dismay at Kanu’s apparent disregard for the judicial process. Many observed that his conduct, including contemptuous behavior in open court, would have attracted immediate sanctions, such as a six-month prison sentence, in other legal systems.

The case continues to draw significant public attention, with many questioning the implications of Kanu’s actions for the integrity of the judicial process and the rule of law in Nigeria.
