A Military General’s Tribute to Defence Journalist Lawrence Bilal

I first met Lawrence in November 2019. At the time, I was the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 7 Division in Maiduguri, and he was part of a fact-finding mission to assess the situation in the Northeast. I decided to personally lead the patrol and tour, and it was during this mission that I noticed Lawrence—a young man who stood out for his thoroughness and inquisitive nature. He asked probing questions, seeking to understand the complexities of the region. Our journey began in Maiduguri and took us to Madagali before we returned. The tour was successful, with no incidents, and involved extensive interactions with locals, vehicle inspections, and assessments of settlements along the way.

That mission marked the beginning of a friendship that endured until his untimely passing. Over time, I came to know his young family, including his son, who shares my name. Lawrence was a consummate journalist, one who understood that reporting on one’s country did not require sensationalism. He was meticulous in his work, often calling to verify facts before going to press. His dedication to truth and accuracy was unwavering.

I encouraged him to study the Lake Chad Basin, given its complex and intriguing dynamics, which have significantly contributed to the security challenges in the Sahel region. True to his nature, Lawrence took up this challenge and delved deeply into the subject. As the Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), I had the privilege of hosting him several times in Ndjamena. Each visit was enriching, as he offered valuable insights and advice.

Lawrence was a brilliant young man who spoke French fluently and felt at home in Francophone countries. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a kind and compassionate individual who loved his family deeply. His passion for his country was evident in his work and his desire to see Nigeria thrive. He had a unique ability to bring a smile to everyone he encountered, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.

It is with profound sadness that I write this tribute for someone so young, talented, and full of life. I am deeply grateful that Lawrence saw me as a senior brother during his lifetime—a bond I will forever cherish. Offering my condolences to his wife, whom I cannot bring myself to refer to as a widow, is incredibly difficult. May Allah protect her, grant her patience and solace, and bless their young children. In Sha Allah, they will achieve greatness in life. As long as I live, I will do my utmost to support his family.

May the gallant soul of Lawrence Bilal Audu find eternal rest, and may his family find comfort during this irreparable loss. Adieu, my dear brother. ????????????????????????
