IGP Egbetokun Warns Against Unlawful Detentions, Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., has issued a strong warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force against detaining individuals beyond legally stipulated periods. The IGP emphasized that respecting the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly during pre-trial detentions, is both a legal obligation and a cornerstone of ethical policing.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP highlighted the importance of adhering to Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantee the right to dignity and personal liberty. He cautioned that any form of unlawful or prolonged detention not only violates these constitutional provisions but also erodes public trust in the police force.

“Adherence to legally stipulated detention periods is non-negotiable. It is a fundamental aspect of upholding the dignity and rights of individuals,” the IGP stated. He further warned that officers found violating these principles would face severe consequences, underscoring the need for accountability within the Force.

The IGP called on all officers to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and conduct in their interactions with the public. He stressed that prioritizing human rights is essential to building stronger relationships with communities and ensuring that policing is conducted with integrity and respect.

The statement also reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to treating all individuals in custody with dignity and in accordance with the law. According to ACP Adejobi, the current leadership of the Force is dedicated to creating a police service that is not only effective in maintaining law and order but also steadfast in protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.

This announcement comes as part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to align its operations with international human rights standards and foster a culture of accountability and transparency.
