Stray bullet kills Lagos man as gunmen ambush police, Chinese nationals in Abia

A 32-year-old man, Zeyanu Muhammed, was killed by a stray bullet during a police anti-robbery operation in the Ketu area, Lagos, on Thursday afternoon.

PRNigeria reports that the incident occurred around 3:50 p.m. in the Gengere community when officers from Area ‘H’ Command, Ogudu, led by ASP Friday Babep, attempted to arrest suspected robbers.

However, the operation was disrupted by hoodlums who aided the suspects’ escape. Amid the chaos, a stray bullet struck Muhammed in the shoulder, killing him instantly.

The police have since moved the body to a morgue for autopsy, while the officers involved in the operation have been detained for internal investigation. In the meantime, patrols have been intensified in the area, and engagements with community leaders are ongoing to avert further unrest. Authorities are also hunting the hoodlums who obstructed the operation.

Similarly, in Abia State, Zagazola reported that another tragedy struck on Friday when gunmen ambushed a convoy of Chinese expatriates and their police escorts en route to a mining site in Isuikwuato Local Government Area.

In the deadly attack, two Chinese nationals—Mr. Quan and Mr. Cai—and a police officer, Inspector Audu Saidu, were killed, with the attackers making away with Saidu’s AK-47 rifle.

Three other Chinese workers were rescued unharmed, while two victims—Inspector Uba Ahmed, who sustained gunshot wounds, and Mr. Huang Lijun, who suffered machete cuts—are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Another police officer, Inspector Igagwu, remains missing. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Marist Cottage Mortuary, Uturu, as security agencies intensify search efforts for the perpetrators and the missing officer.

Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, bandits launched a deadly assault on Friday, killing a father, Garbati, and his son, Abubakar Babuga Garbati, along the Bungudu-Duhuwa Road. The victims were reportedly hacked to death before the attackers fled with their motorcycle.

Just hours later, another group of about 20 bandits overran a Community Police Guards (CPG) checkpoint between Sauna and Gidan Kano, abducting one of its members, Asiru Dawa. Security forces have since launched military operations aimed at rescuing the abductee and capturing those responsible.

These back-to-back tragedies highlight the continuing threat posed by criminal elements across the country, raising fresh concerns about public safety, the welfare of security personnel, and the need for comprehensive national security reforms.
