ABU International Studies Alumni Awards Scholarships to 24 Students

The International Studies Alumni Association of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has awarded scholarships to 24 indigent students of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, as part of its commitment to supporting students facing financial hardship.

The announcement was made over the weekend by the Association’s National Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Abdullahi Shuaibu, in a statement issued to reporters in Zaria. The scholarships, according to Shuaibu, are aimed at easing the academic burden of the beneficiaries by covering course registration and tuition expenses.

The award letters were formally presented to the students by ABU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, alongside the National President of the Alumni Association, Ambassador Muntari Kaita. Ambassador Kaita confirmed that disbursement of the scholarship funds had been completed in the past two weeks to ensure students met their academic obligations.

In a show of appreciation, the Alumni Association executives paid a courtesy visit to Prof. Bala, thanking him for his unwavering support toward the association’s initiatives. Ambassador Kaita praised the Vice Chancellor’s leadership, noting his resilience in steering the university despite challenges, including high electricity costs.

The Alumni President also briefed the Vice Chancellor on the progress of the ongoing renovation of the department’s e-Library, expressing optimism that it would be completed and inaugurated before the end of Prof. Bala’s tenure.

Additionally, the association revealed plans to host a symposium in September to honor former Deans of the defunct Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), once regarded as the intellectual hub of ABU.

Ambassador Kaita also used the occasion to extend condolences to the University over the recent passing of Malam Bashir Munnir, the Deputy Registrar (Alumni Relations and Advancement).

Prof. Bala, in his response, lauded the association as one of the most proactive alumni bodies within the university. He commended the group’s consistency in supporting its alma mater and welcomed the idea of the upcoming symposium, highlighting the historic role of FASS in shaping public policy and academic thought in Nigeria.

Established in 2021, the ABU International Studies Alumni Association comprises former students of the university’s International Studies programme, including retired diplomats, academics, journalists, and professionals. The association remains committed to addressing challenges facing its department and the university at large.
