NAF Deepens Strategic Defence Ties with Brazil to Boost Operational Capabilities

In a major step toward bolstering the operational readiness and modernization of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has concluded a strategic visit to Brazil, where he engaged with top defence and aerospace stakeholders to explore new avenues for cooperation and capacity development.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF Spokesperson in a statement said the four-day visit, saw the CAS participate in the Latin America Aerospace Defence and Security (LAAD) Fair in Rio de Janeiro. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the critical role of international collaboration in tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

“In an increasingly complex and dynamic security environment, strategic partnerships remain a critical pillar in building a more agile, innovative, and combat-ready air force,” he said. “Nigeria and Brazil share a long-standing history of military cooperation, and we are here to strengthen that bond for mutual benefit.”

During the visit, the CAS held high-level talks with the President and CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, Mr. Bosco Da Costa Junior, as well as the representative of the Brazilian Air Force Chief, Lieutenant General Malta. Discussions focused on sustaining the NAF’s A-29 Super Tucano fleet, technical support, and expanding collaboration in pilot and logistics training, research, and development.

Air Marshal Abubakar also met with international defence manufacturers including Arsenal, FN Herstal, OGMA, and representatives of the Portuguese Air Force, reinforcing NAF’s commitment to securing cutting-edge solutions for its operations.

Beyond the exhibition, the CAS toured Embraer’s production facility at Gavião Peixoto—where the A-29 Super Tucano and KC-390M aircraft are manufactured—as well as the GESPI facility in São José dos Campos. He commended both companies for their longstanding support and urged continued collaboration to improve NAF’s mission readiness and operational efficiency.

The Brazilian engagement is part of a broader strategy aligned with the NAF’s 2025 Strategic Objectives, which emphasize operational readiness, force modernization, and strengthened international partnerships.
