Customs Rakes in N190bn, Seizes N10.2bn Worth of Contrabands in Q1 2025

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Area 2 Command, Onne Port in Rivers State, announced on Wednesday that it generated a total of ₦190.57 billion in revenue during the first quarter of 2025.

Comptroller Mohammed Babandede, Customs Area Controller for the Command, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Command headquarters. He noted that the revenue marked a significant increase of over ₦27.86 billion compared to the ₦162.7 billion recorded in the same period of 2024—representing a 17.12% growth.

In addition to revenue generation, the Command also intercepted 20 containers loaded with various contraband items illegally imported into the country. The seized goods, which include illicit drugs, second-hand clothing, and foodstuffs, were valued at over ₦10.29 billion in duty-paid value.

“These seizures are the results of our officers’ courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to their oath of allegiance,” Babandede stated. “They were achieved through detailed documentary checks, careful examination, and operational integrity.”

On exports, the Command recorded the shipment of 1,274,695 metric tonnes of goods—mainly agricultural products and solid minerals—valued at ₦2.34 billion during the quarter.

Babandede issued a stern warning to smugglers, stressing that anyone caught violating customs laws would be prosecuted in accordance with existing regulations. “Importing illicit drugs and prohibited items has serious consequences, not just for the culprits, but also for society at large,” he said.

He reiterated the Service’s commitment to bolstering national economic growth and security and called for continuous cooperation from stakeholders and the trading community.

“The Nigeria Customs Service remains focused on its statutory mandate, and we urge compliant stakeholders to continue their collaboration with us for mutual benefits,” he added.

PRNigeria reports that the intercepted items were displayed during the briefing, reflecting the Command’s heightened anti-smuggling efforts in the region.
