Spokespersons Charter will Institutionalize Ethical Communication – Reps
The spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Akin Rotimi, has commended the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) for its leadership in promoting ethical standards and professionalism within the country’s communication ecosystem.
He spoke at the “6th National Spokespersons Awards (NSA) in Abuja on Wednesday.
Organised by Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), publishers of PRNigeria, Economic Confidential and Spokespersons Digest; in collaboration with the NIPR, this year’s NSA themed: “Voice of Influence, Champions of Change”, brought together key actors in Nigeria’s communication landscape to honour individuals and institutions who have demonstrated excellence in public communication.

Rotimi lauded the unveiling of the NIPR’s “Charter and Codes of Practice” for Spokespersons, describing it as a landmark step towards institutionalizing accountability and best practices in public communication.
He emphasized the evolving demands of 21st-century public communication, calling for a shift from superficial messaging to empathetic, strategic, and truth-grounded engagement.
“In the 21st century, communication must go beyond spin and optics—it must reflect understanding. Empathy is the new ethos of credible communication,” he said.
He also advocated for greater inclusion of spokespersons in decision-making processes, arguing that effective governance requires communication to be integrated from the outset.
“Spokespersons must have a seat at the table where decisions are made,” he stated. “We must advocate for stakeholder cultures that value feedback and integrate public sentiment into governance.”
