‘We Will Tell the Army’s Story Through Action’ — Lt Col Anele Pledges
The newly Nigerian Army spokeperson, Lieutenant Colonel Onyema Anele on Tuesday has assured that the service story would be told not just through words, but through visible actions that reflect honour, sacrifice, and service to the nation.
She made the declaration as she officially assumed office as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations — a historic moment that makes her the first female officer to hold the position in the history of the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Addressing officers, soldiers, and members of the press at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, Lt Col Anele expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, describing her appointment as not only significant but symbolic of the evolving inclusivity and forward-thinking direction of the Nigerian Army under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede.
“This moment is one I do not take lightly, not only because of the enormous responsibilities that come with this office, but also because of the expectations and the historic significance of my appointment,” she said.
“We will continue to tell the Nigerian Army’s story, not just through words, but through actions that reflect honour, sacrifice, responsibility, and service to the nation.”
Lt Col Anele emphasized her commitment to leading the Directorate with transparency, professionalism, and proactive engagement, both with internal stakeholders and the media.

In her address, she paid tribute to her predecessor, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, praising his transformative leadership and contributions to repositioning the Directorate as a strategic communications powerhouse.
“I will always value your counsel and support,” she said, acknowledging his passion, resilience, and the legacy of innovation he leaves behind.
Earlier, in an emotional farewell speech, Major General Nwachukwu reflected on his nearly four-year tenure, describing it as a journey of transformation that redefined Army Public Relations. He recounted milestones including the establishment of the Nigerian Army Info TV, the creation of a Strategic Communications Centre, acquisition of advanced multimedia equipment, and the training of personnel in global best practices in strategic communication and media engagement.
He described the Directorate under his leadership as having evolved from a support arm into a strategic asset in national security.
“To my successor, I say this — the foundations are laid, the tools are in place. Take the Directorate to even greater heights. Carry the torch with purpose, passion, and integrity,” he charged.
Anele urged officers and staff of the Directorate to remain loyal, united, and focused, adding that with collective effort, the Directorate will reach new heights in amplifying the voice and values of the Nigerian Army.
