Nigerian Navy Rescues 99 from Drowning After Boat Collision in Rivers
Personnel of the Nigerian Navy have saved 99 passengers from drowning after a collision between a barge and a market boat in Rivers State waters.
According to a press statement issued by Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information, today in Abuja, the incident occurred on Tuesday, April 29, when a barge identified as ADAM (Damen Buba) collided head-on with a market-bound wooden boat en route Akuku Toru Local Government Area.
Responding immediately, a Nigerian Navy rescue team from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER, alongside operatives from Naval Security Station 035 and four supporting gunboats, launched what the Navy described as “a coordinated and effective search and rescue operation.”

“All 99 passengers onboard [were rescued], despite the challenging conditions,” the statement read. “Furthermore, most of the passengers’ goods were also salvaged successfully.
“The timely intervention and prompt response of Nigerian Navy personnel ensured that no lives were lost and most of the valuable properties were preserved,” he stated.
The Navy emphasized its ongoing commitment to maritime safety under the leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla.
“The Service will continue to ensure the security and safety of all legitimate sea farers within Nigeria’s maritime domain,” the statement assured.
