We’ll Deploy Tech, Reclaim Ungoverned Spaces from Bandits – Tinubu Assures

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has restated his administration’s unwavering commitment to reclaiming ungoverned forest areas from bandits and terrorists, particularly in the North-West region, through the deployment of advanced surveillance technology and collaborative security strategies.

Speaking at a state dinner hosted by Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda on Friday night, Tinubu responded to concerns raised by former Governor Aminu Bello Masari on the persistent security threats in the region.

“Security is a challenge, no doubt,” Tinubu admitted. “I addressed members of our armed forces earlier today and assured them of our determination to fight terrorism and banditry. We will take back our forests and invest more in modern technology.”

He emphasized that national security is essential for attracting investment, noting that no meaningful economic growth can be achieved in the face of persistent insecurity. “Investment is cowardly. It will not go where there is terrorism or banditry. Together with states and local councils, we will solve the problem,” he assured.

Tinubu also highlighted positive signs of Nigeria’s economic recovery, attributing recent growth to bold reforms. As part of his administration’s effort to boost local economies, he revealed plans to upgrade the Katsina airport—a move expected to generate employment and spur economic activity.

Addressing the plight of terrorism victims, Tinubu pledged federal support to help them rebuild their lives. He thanked Masari for his support during the 2023 elections and acknowledged the political contributions of Katsina indigenes, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as “a man of integrity.”

In his address, Governor Radda revealed the establishment of a local security outfit focused on intelligence gathering. He disclosed that the planned airport upgrade—featuring a cargo terminal, customer terminal, and fire station—would create 2,700 direct jobs at a projected cost of N54 billion.

Former Governor Masari, while expressing gratitude for federal appointments given to Katsina indigenes, praised President Tinubu’s resolve and leadership courage. “You have the political will to confront Nigeria’s challenges. Leadership is tested in hard times, and I believe you have what it takes,” Masari said.

He called for a holistic, grassroots-based approach to addressing insecurity in the North-West region.

The dinner was attended by governors from Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kwara States, who were in Katsina for the commissioning of projects and the wedding of Governor Radda’s daughter.
