Ex-Governor Sule Lamido to Unveil Memoir Next Tuesday

By Kabir Akintayo

In what promises to be one of the most politically significant literary events of the year, former Governor of Jigawa State and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Sule Lamido, is set to launch his much-anticipated autobiography titled ‘Being True to Myself’, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the NAF Conference Center, Abuja.

At a media briefing held on Tuesday at Rockview Hotel, Abuja, Senator Mustapha Khabeeb, Chairman of the Sule Lamido Book Launch Committee, described the forthcoming launch as a landmark occasion that will “unbundle the real story of Nigeria’s political trajectory”—from the tail end of the Second Republic through the military era to the birth and unfolding of the Fourth Republic.

According to Khabeeb, Lamido’s autobiography provides a rare insider account of the dramatic twists, betrayals, and power struggles that have shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey. “It is not just a personal narrative,” Khabeeb stated, “but a political compendium capturing the soul of Nigeria’s governance and democratic history.”

Titled Being True to Myself, the book delves deep into the evolution of Sule Lamido as a radical political actor, public servant, and elder statesman. The memoir is expected to shed light on his role in major political developments, including his imprint on the June 12 movement, the formation of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and his years as Foreign Affairs Minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo—who also wrote the foreword and will grace the event as Special Guest of Honour.

Also expected at the high-profile launch are former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), who will chair the occasion, and former Senate President Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who is scheduled to review the book. A host of governors, legislators, business leaders, traditional rulers, and political stakeholders are also billed to attend.

Khabeeb highlighted Lamido’s unwavering commitment to political ideals, recounting how his two-term governorship of Jigawa transformed the state despite fierce opposition and politically motivated legal battles. “He was tried, alongside his sons, for seven years on trumped-up charges and was ultimately vindicated. That’s a story worth telling,” he said.

With its candid reflections, bold truths, and historical revelations, Being True to Myself is poised to resonate with historians, political scientists, and Nigerians who yearn for principled leadership and a clearer understanding of the nation’s past.

“This is not just a book launch,” Khabeeb concluded. “It is a moment of national reflection and an invitation to examine the roots of Nigeria’s enduring challenges through the lens of a man who has lived—and shaped—its history.”

The launch holds on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the NAF Conference Center, Abuja.
