IED Explosion Injure Scores in Borno Community

Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists launched separate deadly attacks in Borno State this week, injuring multiple victims, including a cattle herder and five children, PRNigeria reports.

In Monguno Local Government Area, a 55-year-old cattle herder, Hassan Bukar, narrowly escaped death after being attacked by insurgents on the evening of Tuesday, May 7, 2025.

Zagazola reports that security sources confirmed that Bukar was ambushed while grazing his cattle in the Wulo bush area and sustained a deep knife wound to the back of his neck.

He was rescued by a patrol team from Monguno Division and is currently receiving treatment at the Monguno General Hospital. In response, troops from Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and Operation Hadin Kai have intensified efforts to locate and neutralize the assailants.

In a separate incident, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Mafa Local Government Area on Wednesday, May 8, injuring five children, one of whom lost a hand. The explosion occurred around 2:25 p.m. near a culvert along the access road to the construction site of the new Mafa Central Mosque.

The victims—identified as Abdullahi Umar, Musa Mele, Fatima Abatcha, Abba Kawu Muhammed, and Khalid Alhaji Bukar—were said to have unknowingly tampered with the hidden explosive. A combined team from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit, Mafa Police Division, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) quickly secured the area and safely detonated additional explosive materials discovered at the site.

Four of the children were transferred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for specialized care, while one child with minor injuries was treated and discharged at Mafa General Hospital.

In the aftermath of the explosion, the EOD-CBRN team conducted an Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) session to raise awareness among children and residents, urging the public to report any suspicious objects to the authorities.

Security agencies continue to call on residents of conflict-affected areas to remain vigilant in the face of ongoing threats.
