Naval Chief Advocates Spiritual Solutions to Insecurity, Inaugurates Worship Centres

As part of activities marking the 69th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, on Thursday inaugurated three newly completed places of worship at Navy Town, Asokoro, Abuja.

He also advocated for the adoption of spiritual approaches as part of broader strategies to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Vice Admiral Ogalla emphasised that while military force remains essential in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other security threats, the role of spiritual fortification cannot be overlooked

“We recognise that the challenges of insurgency, terrorism and other forms of irregular threats facing us today require a whole-of-society approach,” Ogalla stated.

“While military efforts are ongoing, we believe spiritual solutions are also vital in overcoming these threats. These worship centres are essential in shaping the minds and character of not only naval personnel but also the wider community.”

The CNS urged officers, ratings, and their families to make use of the worship centres for spiritual upliftment, which he said would foster discipline, dedication, and a renewed commitment to national service.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Commander of the Naval Unit,Commodore Oluseyi Oladipo, revealed that the newly inaugurated centres include a Catholic church, a Church of Redemption, and a central mosque.

He noted that the facilities would serve personnel and residents of Navy Town, Admiralty Estate, Lakeview Estate, and the surrounding areas. They will also function as operational bases for the Directorate of Naval Chaplain Services and the Directorate of Islamic Affairs.

Oladipo disclosed that construction began on June 17, 2019, and was completed in April 2025. Each church is designed to accommodate about 1,000 worshipers and includes an upper gallery and a conference hall. The mosque has a capacity of approximately 1,200 worshipers, with designated male and female sections.

on his part, the Director of Chaplaincy, Roman Catholic Church, Naval Headquarters, Navy Captain Richmond Diala, expressed gratitude to the CNS for his vision and commitment to the spiritual welfare of naval personnel.

“This is not just about buildings; it is about sanctuaries that will bless generations,” Diala said. “The CNS has demonstrated remarkable faith and leadership by ensuring the completion of this vital project.”

He offered prayers for God’s guidance, success, and protection for the Nigerian Navy as it continues its service to the nation.
