2 Soldiers, Many Terrorists Killed as Military Foils ISWAP Midnight Attack in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) under the Joint Task Force North East have successfully repelled a daring midnight attack by terrorists of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in New Marte, Borno State.

The foiled attack, which occurred around 1:35 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, targeted the 50 Task Force Battalion base.

Intelligence sources informed Zagazola Makama that the terrorists, in large numbers, attempted to infiltrate the military location under the cover of darkness.

Swiftly responding to the incursion, troops of the 50 Battalion, supported by a reinforcement team from the 24 Task Force Brigade Garrison and the elite 134 Special Forces Battalion, engaged the assailants in a fierce gun duel that lasted several minutes.

The troops’ gallant response, combined with precision airstrikes from the Nigerian Air Force component of Operation Hadin Kai, decimated scores of the fleeing terrorists, neutralizing many and scattering the rest into the surrounding bush.

A military source disclosed that the troops successfully defended their position and have since launched exploitation operations to pursue fleeing insurgents and recover arms, ammunition, and other logistics abandoned by the terrorists.

“Regrettably, two personnel paid the supreme price during the encounter. A gun truck was damaged while a tire of a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle was also affected,” the source stated.

The latest assault on New Marte is seen as part of ISWAP’s failed attempt to regain operational ground in the Lake Chad and northern Borno fringes, where ongoing military offensives have continued to dislodge remnants of terrorist cells.

Security authorities maintain that the situation in New Marte is under firm control, with intensified patrols, aerial surveillance, and intelligence operations underway to forestall any further threats.

Further updates and visuals from the operation are expected to be released by the military high command.
