Poor Performance: Group Knocks Gov Lawal Despite Huge FAAC Allocations

Two years into his tenure, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal is facing harsh criticism from a civil society group in the North-West, which has described his administration as a “monumental failure” despite receiving billions in federal allocations.

The Zamfara Progressive Coalition (ZAC), in a statement signed by its president, Alhaji Ibrahim Dan-Azumi, accused the governor of mismanaging funds disbursed by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) without delivering tangible development.

“Zamfara is worse off today than it was in 2023,” the group said. “Despite huge inflows from FAAC, not a single major road, hospital, or school has been completed or rehabilitated. The people have been abandoned.”

The coalition decried what it called the governor’s absence from the state, saying he spends more time in Abuja than addressing the worsening humanitarian and security crises at home.

“Go to Tsafe, Bungudu, and Maru LGAs — citizens are living like refugees. Bandits now collect taxes from farmers, while the government remains silent. Pregnant women are dying in ill-equipped hospitals. Schools have no chairs, no roofs, no teachers. Where has the money gone?” Dan-Azumi queried.

ZAC pointed to the rise in out-of-school children, unpaid salaries at the local government level, and the deepening poverty rate as evidence of failed governance. It also criticized the governor for prioritizing “pageantry over performance.”

“This is a state rich in gold, fertile land, and a youthful population, yet none of these resources have been harnessed. Instead, the government touts IGR growth on paper while people remain poor and hungry,” the statement read.

The group announced plans to publish monthly scorecards of the governor’s activities to increase public accountability and urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate how Zamfara’s FAAC allocations have been spent over the last two years.

“Governor Lawal promised a new Zamfara. What we got is a ghost governor. Leadership requires presence, empathy, and action. Sadly, we’ve seen none,” the group said.
