PSC to Commence 2025 Police Recruitment, Seeks Data Protection Support, Accessibility to NIMC Database

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced that it is finalizing arrangements to commence the recruitment of Cadets and Constables into the Nigeria Police Force for the 2025 exercise.

This information was contained in a press statement issued by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

As part of its preparations, the Commission on Wednesday visited the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) in Abuja to seek strategic collaboration that would ensure a credible and data-driven recruitment process.

Leading the PSC delegation, Chairman of the Commission and retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Argungu (mni), emphasized the need for strong data protection frameworks to enable accurate background checks on prospective recruits. He noted that data is central to effective planning and recruitment transparency.

“We are here to fortify the Commission’s recruitment exercises. We need to know who we are recruiting, and we want to partner with you to make it a success,” Argungu told the NDPC team.

According to him, the Commission will soon commence the recruitment of Cadets and the 30,000 Constables annually approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

However, the PSC Chairman expressed frustration over the Commission’s continued inability to access the database of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), a challenge he said has hampered effective verification of applicants’ identities.

He appealed to the National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, to intervene and help facilitate access to the NIMC database, describing such access as crucial to fulfilling the PSC’s constitutional mandate.

In response, Dr. Olatunji assured the PSC of the Commission’s commitment to support the police recruitment process through robust data protection mechanisms. He pledged to ensure the PSC gains the required access to relevant databases for an efficient, credible, and secure recruitment process.

“We are committed to supporting the aspirations of the PSC to achieve a data-protected and credible recruitment exercise,” Dr. Olatunji said, adding that the NDPC would also train PSC staff on data protection best practices.

To further cement the collaboration, both organizations agreed to establish a joint committee to immediately commence work on data management and protection strategies in line with global standards.
