FG Declares June 12 as Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday in celebration of this year’s Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. He extended his congratulations to Nigerians on the occasion, which marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in the country.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister emphasized the symbolic importance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“June 12 represents our historic journey toward building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future is assured,” the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the progress made over the past two and a half decades, describing it as a testament to the resilience, strength, and renewed hope of Nigerians.
He reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to upholding the universal values of democracy, including the freely expressed will of the people in shaping the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
