FMC Abuja Dismisses Allegations Circulated in Viral Video, Assures Public of Quality Emergency Care

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has launched an internal investigation in response to a viral online video that negatively portrays its Emergency Unit. The video, which sparked concerns among the public, prompted swift action by hospital management and the Federal Ministry of Health.

In a preliminary statement released by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Obadiah N.K. Gana, FMC Abuja emphasized that initial findings contradicted the claims made in the video. “The emergency department had an adequate supply of medical consumables, including latex gloves, and sufficient resuscitation equipment and medications,” the statement said.

Furthermore, the hospital clarified that there was no shortage of patient transfer equipment such as trolleys and wheelchairs at the time of the incident. The management is also engaging staff on duty and other stakeholders as part of its ongoing assessment.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has ordered a full investigation into the matter. According to the hospital, the final report will be made public upon conclusion of the inquiry.

FMC Abuja reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and patient welfare, noting its robust feedback system which includes phone lines, QR codes, and email channels prominently displayed across the facility. The hospital also highlighted its social welfare programs such as the indigent fund, which supports financially challenged patients, and the work of its social workers who help reunite treated unconscious patients with their families.

Beyond emergency care, FMC Abuja serves as a center of excellence for advanced medical procedures including open-heart surgeries, laser treatments, kidney transplants, and spinal surgeries—services that are rarely available in public hospitals.

“We apologize for any distress caused by the video and assure the public that we are taking the matter seriously,” the statement concluded. “FMC Abuja remains committed to delivering quality healthcare services with empathy and compassion.”

The hospital encouraged continued public engagement and expressed gratitude for the trust and feedback it continues to receive from patients and the broader community.
