Nigeria Police Recover Vehicles Stolen to Ghana and Niger, Arrest Suspects

The Nigeria Police Force has achieved a significant breakthrough in its fight against cross-border crime, successfully recovering multiple vehicles stolen from Nigeria and trafficked to neighboring Ghana and Niger. Three suspects have been arrested in Ghana in connection with one of the recoveries.

These operations, spearheaded by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, highlight the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to improved global policing, a pledge reaffirmed by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

In a recent operation, operatives from INTERPOL NCB Abuja, working in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB Accra, recovered a 2020 Toyota Prado in Accra, Ghana. The vehicle, belonging to a Nigerian Federal Government Agency, was stolen during a robbery in Abuja. Three individuals were apprehended in Ghana, have been charged to court in Accra, and the vehicle has since been successfully returned and formally handed over to the concerned agency in Nigeria.

Similarly, a 2018 Toyota Hilux, stolen from a staff member of another Federal Government agency in Utako District, FCT Abuja, on October 18, 2024, was recovered. Through extensive investigation and international cooperation facilitated by INTERPOL NCB Niamey, the vehicle was tracked to Agadez, Niger Republic. It was officially handed over to a senior representative of the agency at the Nigeria-Niger border (Ilela/Konni).

The Nigeria Police Force is also in the final stages of recovering two additional vehicles – a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV – which were stolen from their owners in Abuja in May 2025 and subsequently sold in Niamey, Niger Republic.

IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun commended the proficiency of the operatives involved in these successful operations. He reiterated the NPF’s commitment under his leadership to enhanced global policing and expressed appreciation for the outstanding support and cooperation from INTERPOL NCB Accra, INTERPOL NCB Niamey, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra for their invaluable assistance.

The Force encourages all citizens to register their vehicles on Police Electronic Platforms and to take all necessary precautions to increase the chances of swift recovery in the unfortunate event of theft.
