Police Foil Robbery Attempt in FCT, Rescue Victims
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully thwarted a robbery attempt in Zone E Extension of the Apo Resettlement area in Abuja, rescuing multiple victims and recovering a vehicle.
The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Monday, following a distress call from a commercial motorcyclist who reported sustained gunfire in the area.
Responding swiftly, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Apo Division, CSP Uchenna Igwebuike, deployed his Ambush and Surveillance Teams to the scene. Upon arrival, the police operatives were met with heavy gunfire from the suspected criminals.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the attackers engaged the officers in a fierce gun battle. Reinforcements led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, arrived promptly at the scene. The police team’s superior firepower forced the assailants to flee into the surrounding hills.

“Following the distress alert, our officers were immediately mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, they came under intense attack but repelled the assailants with superior firepower,” the statement read.
During the operation, three individuals with various degrees of injuries sustained from the attack were rescued. A light green Toyota Corolla, with registration number GWA 620 AU, belonging to one of the victims, was also recovered at the scene.
All rescued victims were rushed to Sahad Hospital in Apo Resettlement for emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel. His body has since been deposited in the hospital’s morgue.
A joint manhunt involving police operatives and local vigilante groups is currently underway to track down the fleeing suspects.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has extended his condolences to the family of the deceased victim and reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the territory.
He urged residents, particularly those in and around the Apo Resettlement area, to report anyone with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest police station. The CP also appealed for continued vigilance and public cooperation in the fight against crime.
