Nigeria, Brazil Bolster Alliance on Tech Transfer, Maritime Security

Nigeria and Brazil have solidified their commitment to enhancing bilateral defence cooperation, with a strong focus on technology transfer and bolstering maritime security.

This was announced today, June 25, 2025, following the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru lauded the dialogue as a pivotal moment for regional stability.

A statement signed by Mati Ali, Personal Assistant on Media & Publicity to the Honourable Minister of Defence said Badaru outlined four critical areas for intensified collaboration: maritime security, joint training and capacity building, defence industry and technology transfer, and intelligence sharing.

He emphasized that this engagement extends beyond mere diplomatic formalities, asserting, “This dialogue reaffirms our shared vision for peace, security, and sustainable development.”

Highlighting the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea, Minister Badaru called for increased joint efforts to combat piracy, illicit trafficking, and other transnational maritime threats plaguing the region. He also acknowledged Brazil’s leadership within the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic (ZOPACAS) and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to active participation in the upcoming Ninth Ministerial Meeting slated to take place in Brazil.

Badaru extended an invitation to Brazil to explore robust opportunities with Nigeria’s Defence Industries Corporation (DICON). These opportunities include crucial areas such as technology transfer, co-production initiatives, and direct investment, signalling a strong intent to localize defence manufacturing capabilities.

The Minister stressed the importance of expanding intelligence-sharing efforts between the two nations, particularly in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and the complex networks of terrorism financing.

Minister Badaru expressed profound gratitude to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both nations and commended the visionary leadership of Vice Presidents Kashim Shettima of Nigeria and Geraldo Alckmin of Brazil for their instrumental roles in driving this strategic initiative forward.

“The path forward is promising. Let us sustain this partnership with vision, purpose, and a shared commitment to regional stability,” Badaru said
