Tinubu Withholds Assent to NDLEA Amendment Bill, Gives Reason
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has withheld his assent to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Amendment Bill, citing constitutional concerns over provisions related to the management of funds recovered from drug-related crimes.

The decision was conveyed in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary session by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. In the letter, President Tinubu referenced Section 58 of the 1999 Constitution, stating that the bill’s proposal to allow NDLEA to retain a percentage of proceeds from drug crimes contravenes existing legal frameworks.
According to the President, current laws require that all criminal proceeds be remitted to a designated government account, from which only the President can authorize disbursement—with the approval of the National Assembly. He emphasized that the rejected clause in the amendment undermines accountability and the balance of powers between the Executive and Legislature.
