Navy Arrests Suspected Militant, Recovers Machine Gun in Bayelsa

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH has apprehended a suspected militant, Daniel Damigo, in Peremabiri, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, recovering a high-powered HK General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and a significant cache of ammunition.

The arrest followed a special operation based on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, carried out with precision by Navy operatives. The suspect has since been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and prosecution.

Addressing journalists on Monday, the Commander of NNS SOROH, Commodore Omobamidele Akinbami, said the Navy acted swiftly and professionally to avoid collateral damage and ensure the safety of the surrounding community.

“The operation led to the arrest of one militant, identified as Mr. Daniel Damigo. A HK GPMG and a substantial quantity of ammunition were recovered. The swift and decisive action ensured minimal disruption to the community,” Akinbami stated.

He acknowledged the collaboration of Labrador Security Services, whose support was instrumental in the successful execution of the operation.

The recovered weapon and ammunition, according to the Navy, will undergo forensic analysis to determine possible links to previous criminal activities.

Commodore Akinbami emphasized that the operation is in line with the Chief of Naval Staff’s mission to sustain a professionally competent and ethical naval force. He issued a stern warning to those involved in militancy, sea robbery, and pipeline vandalism.

“Bayelsa State will not serve as a safe haven for criminals. The Nigerian Navy, along with Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) and other security agencies, remains committed to tracking down and prosecuting perpetrators,” he warned.

In a related development, Akinbami disclosed that two suspected cultists were recently arrested in Yenagoa with a locally made pistol and ammunition. The suspects have been transferred to the police anti-cultism unit for further action.

Additionally, naval personnel engaged suspected sea robbers in a gun battle in Akassa on Sunday, June 29. The criminals were forced to flee, abandoning their operational boat, which is now in the custody of the Navy.

Commodore Akinbami called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, stressing that the protection of communities and national assets is a shared responsibility.

“Together, we can build a safer, more secure, and prosperous Nigeria,” he added.
