MNJTF Receives 5 Swamp Buggies to Boost Security, Economic Recovery in Lake Chad Region

The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has taken delivery of five swamp buggies to enhance its counter-insurgency and waterway security operations in the Lake Chad region.

The equipment, donated by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in partnership with the Borno State Government, is expected to bolster both security and economic activities in the riverine areas of the basin.

The official handover ceremony was held at the Navy Base, Lake Chad Fish Dam, with the Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, representing Governor Babagana Zulum at the commissioning.

Speaking at the event, Kadafur said the donation reflects the sustained commitment of political authorities toward stabilising the Lake Chad Basin and reviving livelihoods impacted by insecurity.

“These swamp buggies will play a critical role in clearing key waterways and improving mobility, thereby enabling safer navigation and promoting cross-border trade and fishing,” the Deputy Governor said.

Force Commander MNJTF, Major General Godwin Mutkut, expressed appreciation to the NEDC and the Borno State Government for what he described as a “strategic intervention” in the joint force’s operations.

“This support strengthens our logistical backbone and enhances our capacity to respond swiftly in the fight against terrorism,” Mutkut said.

He noted that the swamp buggies would significantly improve the task force’s reach in riverine terrain, especially in hard-to-access areas exploited by terrorist groups for movement and concealment.

Dignitaries at the event included Governor of the Region of Lake Chad, General Saleh Haggar Tidjani, senior MNJTF military commanders, traditional leaders, and government officials from Borno State and the Lake Chad region.

The handover underscores a growing synergy between civil authorities and security forces in the Lake Chad Basin, as regional actors work to restore peace and enable economic recovery in communities affected by over a decade of i

nsurgency.
