Lagos Police Roll Out Proactive Measures Ahead of Saturday’s Local Council Polls

Ahead of the July 12 Local Government Elections in Lagos State, the Police Command has announced comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly exercise across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, security operatives under the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) will be massively deployed across all polling units and collation centers.

As part of the election security plan, the Command will enforce a total restriction of vehicular movement across Lagos State from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The restriction will apply to all roads and waterways, and will be strictly implemented by the police and other security agencies.

“Only vehicles providing essential services such as ambulances, fire trucks, and accredited security patrols will be allowed movement. No state-owned security outfits or quasi-security agencies are authorized to participate in the election operations,” the statement read.

In line with the Electoral Act, the Command also prohibited armed escorts and security aides from accompanying political office holders or candidates to polling units or collation centers. Additionally, the use of sirens and covered number plates in or around voting areas is strictly banned.

Exempted from the movement restriction are medical emergency workers, LASIEC officials, accredited media personnel, and election observers—provided they possess valid identification tags issued by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

“All accredited stakeholders including security agents, media, and observers must wear LASIEC-certified ID tags throughout the election period. Anyone without proper identification will be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted under the Electoral Act,” the Command warned.

The Commissioner of Police urged residents to cooperate with officers deployed to their areas and to carry out their civic duties peacefully. He warned that any attempt to disrupt the election by miscreants, hoodlums, or thugs would be met with the full force of the law.

“All 15 political parties participating in the election must ensure that their members conduct themselves responsibly. Any act of overzealousness, violence, or disruption will not be tolerated,” CP Jimoh emphasized.

The Command also called on parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against any acts of intimidation or harassment during the election. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities via the police emergency lines: 08063299264 or 08065154338.

The Lagos Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to a safe, secure, and credible electoral process, and appreciated the anticipated cooperation of all residents toward achieving this goal.
