SGF Akume Leads Presidential Committee for Buhari’s State Funeral

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the constitution of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to organise a dignified state burial for former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, at a hospital in London.

The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has been mandated to coordinate all activities and ceremonial arrangements to honour the late statesman.

According to a statement released by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, President Tinubu underscored the significance of honouring Buhari’s legacy with national recognition and solemn respect.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee comprises top government officials and heads of the nation’s security and defence institutions. Members include:

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning

Minister of Defence

Minister of Information and National Orientation

Minister of Works

Minister of Interior

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

Minister of Housing and Urban Development

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare

The General Services Office (GSO) within the Office of the SGF will serve as the Committee’s Secretariat.

As part of the national mourning, President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at their entrances for members of the public to express their sympathies.

Additionally, two central condolence registers will be opened in Abuja — one at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and another at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre — to accommodate tributes from the diplomatic corps and general public.

Further details on the funeral arrangements will be communicated by the SGF’s office in due course.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, led Nigeria as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, and earlier served as the country’s military Head of State from 1984 to 1985. His passing marks the close of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political and military history.
