FCT Police Nab 78 Suspected Criminals

In a renewed crackdown on criminal activities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Police Command has intensified raids on identified black spots and criminal hideouts, leading to the arrest of 78 suspects across various divisions in Abuja, PRNigeria reports.

The large-scale operation, conducted between Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday, targeted notorious flashpoints and abandoned buildings across Jikwoyi, Apo, Nyanya, Karu, Wuse, Kubwa, Dutse-Alhaji, Mpape, Karmo, Utako, and Kurudu.

Police sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation, which began around 11:40 p.m., was launched in response to growing public concerns over increasing cases of robbery, drug abuse, and cult-related violence in several satellite communities of the FCT.

During the raids, police operatives apprehended scores of suspects—mostly young men—found loitering around uncompleted structures and isolated areas under suspicious circumstances. Items recovered from some of the suspects included substances believed to be Indian hemp and other incriminating materials.

A senior officer involved in the operation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the exercise forms part of the Command’s broader strategy to disrupt criminal networks and eliminate safe havens for illicit activity.

“We focused on areas where we’ve consistently received reports of petty theft, drug dealing, and assaults. Profiling and screening of the suspects are currently ongoing. Those found to have committed crimes will face prosecution,” the officer stated.

Residents of affected areas, particularly Karu and Dutse-Alhaji, welcomed the police action, describing it as timely and necessary. “We’ve lived in fear for too long. Criminals have turned abandoned buildings into hideouts. This action by the police is a huge relief,” said Musa Ibrahim, a trader in Karu.

The FCT Police Command has assured the public that due process will be strictly followed. Suspects found innocent after profiling will be released immediately, while those linked to criminal activities will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
