NYSC Seeks Stakeholder Support to Enhance Orientation Exercises

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to improve the Orientation Course and other core activities of the Scheme.

Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, made the pledge at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Orientation Workshop, held in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

He noted that the workshop, which brought together NYSC management and key orientation stakeholders, was designed to review past exercises and strategize for improved performance in future orientation camps.

“The periodic conduct of the Pre-Orientation Workshop is a testament to NYSC Management’s resolve to continuously enhance the Orientation Course content. Our aim is to better equip Corps Members for the critical task of nation-building,” General Nafiu said.

He emphasized the need to uphold the Orientation Course as a platform for instilling core national values such as discipline, patriotism, and unity—traits he described as essential amid rising distractions and competing interests in society.

Declaring the workshop open, Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, represented by the Acting Governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, commended the NYSC for its consistent contributions to national growth and unity since its inception in 1973.

He praised the Scheme for its roles in community development, healthcare delivery, policy awareness, education, and active participation in national programmes such as elections and census exercises—efforts that have earned Nigeria international recognition.

“NYSC remains a cornerstone of our collective aspirations. Its impact is evident in the various sectors where Corps Members have made indelible marks. It is therefore imperative that we continue to support and empower the Scheme,” Governor Sule said.

He further noted that his administration would continue to invest in infrastructure and create a conducive environment for youths to thrive, while urging the Scheme to explore more innovative approaches in driving national development.

In his introductory remarks, Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Dr Ahmed Wada Ikaka, described the Orientation Camp as a defining stage in the service year, which often leaves a lasting impression on Corps Members.

“It is, therefore, critical that we make the Orientation Camp a worthwhile and impactful experience that sets the tone for productive national service,” Dr Ikaka said.

The Pre-Orientation Workshop had as its theme, “Maintaining the Integrity of the Orientation Course in the Face of Competing Interests.”
