Rivers Police Arrest Suspects in Lawyer’s Murder, Recover Weapons

Rivers State Police have announced the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the murder of Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Barrister Bright Owhor. The 46-year-old was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on July 6, 2025, at his residence on Market Road in Rumuomasi.

Following the killing, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a ten-day investigation, which involved intelligence gathering and technical surveillance. This led to the identification and apprehension of all individuals involved.

Police identified the suspects as:

* Godfrey Emmanuel (a.k.a. Ibu), 30, the alleged gang leader.

* Henry Peter, 24, who police say was the shooter.

* Prince Samuel, 30, an armed operative.

* Daniel Godwin, 25, the driver of the getaway vehicle.

* Promise Wikere, 22, the handler of stolen vehicles.

* Chukwu Nneji, 34.

* Justice Dimkpa, 27.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to being members of the Deygbam Secret Cult Group. They admitted to their roles in the murder, withdrawing funds from the victim’s bank account, and involvement in recent cult-related violence between rival factions in Diobu, Port Harcourt.

Police recovered several items, including four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, a Toyota Camry, and a mini-bus.

The Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, commended the officers for their work, stating that the arrests reflect the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents. The operation is part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and build public trust in law enforcement.

The case is ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged in court.
