Nigeria Records Zero Piracy in Five Years – CNS Ogalla

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has disclosed that Nigeria has not recorded a single case of piracy in its waterways in the last five years.

Ogalla made this known on Saturday during the passing-out parade of the 2025 set of Young Sailors at the Nigerian Navy School, Ikot Ntuen, Akwa Ibom State. He was represented at the event by the Chief of Administration of the Nigerian Navy School, Rear Admiral Gabriel Aligwe.

According to him, sustained naval operations and surveillance have significantly improved security across the nation’s maritime domain.

He said: “Even though this occasion is not primarily for addressing security issues, it is important to note that in all parts of the country, different operations are ongoing. Concerning the waterways, we have Operation Delta Sanity, several routine patrols, and surveillance systems in place. At every point, Nigerian Navy ships are at sea to keep our waters safe. For about five years now, Nigeria has recorded zero cases of piracy. This shows the level of commitment and effort by our personnel who constantly patrol the waterways.”

Ogalla urged the graduating sailors to remain resilient and focused on their careers, stressing that the training they had undergone provided a solid foundation for a bright future in the military.

“My advice to them is to continue to pursue their dreams and stay resilient. Many of them will be absorbed into the military—some into the Nigerian Defence Academy and others into the Nigerian Navy. The training they have received is meant to give them proper grounding for a rewarding career in the military,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, congratulated the young sailors for their achievements.

He advised them to uphold discipline, remain focused, and avoid negative habits that could derail their future.

“With the quality of facilities available in this school, I have no doubt you have been well-groomed and equipped with the potential to succeed in society. Remain determined in your educational pursuits and shun all vices, as they will only attract negative consequences,” the governor charged.
