IGP Upgrades Police Medical Section to Directorate Status

In a move aimed at deepening police reforms and prioritizing the welfare of personnel, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the elevation of the Nigeria Police Force Medical Section to a full-fledged Directorate of Medical Services.

The decision, announced on Wednesday in Abuja, underscores the Force’s renewed commitment to healthcare delivery as a key pillar of police welfare and operational efficiency.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the new Directorate will institutionalize medical services within the police structure, ensuring better coordination, improved competency, and long-term investment in preventive and emergency healthcare. The benefits, he said, will extend not only to serving and retired officers but also to host communities across the country.

The Directorate will be led by the Force Chief Medical Director, who will coordinate the roles of other directors and medical professionals. This leadership framework, the statement explained, is expected to guarantee specialized oversight, effective resource management, and modernization of healthcare services within the Force.

Egbetokun stressed that the initiative goes beyond welfare, describing it as a strategic investment in national security. “By safeguarding the health of officers and their families, the Nigeria Police Force enhances its collective capacity to discharge its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property,” he said.

The Police Chief reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to comprehensive reforms that would raise morale, improve professionalism, and provide sustainable welfare systems for police personnel.
