Over 1,000 Terror Groups Threaten Africa’s Stability – UN Envoy
Former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, has revealed that more than 1,000 terrorist groups are currently operating across the African continent.
Prof. Gambari made the disclosure while delivering a goodwill message at the ongoing African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit in Abuja on Monday.

The summit, themed “Combating Contemporary Threats to Regional Peace and Security in Africa: The Role of Strategic Defence Collaboration,” brought together top military chiefs and security experts to deliberate on joint strategies against insurgency, terrorism, and emerging threats.
The former diplomat stressed the urgent need for stronger military cooperation across Africa, warning that the proliferation of terror groups poses a major threat to regional stability and development.
“African militaries must strive not only to defend their individual countries, but also their regions and, collectively, the entire continent,” Gambari said.
He further emphasized the importance of reinvigorating Africa’s defence industries and protecting homegrown technologies from foreign exploitation, insisting that Africa must build resilience through indigenous solutions.
