UN Deputy Sec.-Gen. Applauds DEPOWA’s Women Empowerment Drive

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, has lauded the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) for its commitment to advancing women empowerment, skill acquisition, and community resilience in Nigeria.

Ms. Mohammed gave the commendation during her courtesy visit to the DEPOWA Secretariat in Abuja on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Received by the President of the Association, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa, she said, the engagement underscored the critical role of women-focused initiatives in building stronger families and societies.

While touring the DEPOWA Skill Acquisition Centre, the UN Deputy Secretary-General interacted with trainees engaged in tailoring, ICT, fashion design, and other vocational programmes.

She praised the centre’s impact, noting that such initiatives not only empower women with practical skills but also uplift entire households, helping communities overcome cycles of poverty and vulnerability.

“What DEPOWA is doing here is remarkable. Empowering women with knowledge and skills is one of the most powerful tools for creating resilient families and thriving societies,” Ms. Mohammed said.

In her remarks, Mrs. Musa described the visit as a moment of “deep alignment” with the United Nations, stressing that DEPOWA’s mission resonates strongly with global goals of inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainable development.

She reaffirmed the association’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and ensuring that families of military and police officers remain pillars of strength for the nation.

The meeting focused on deepening collaboration between DEPOWA and the UN in the areas of women’s empowerment, community resilience, and inclusive growth.

They pledged to strengthen ties to bring hope, expand access to education and training, and promote social development.

Ms. Mohammed further highlighted that DEPOWA’s programmes align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

She stressed that empowering women with skills and opportunities is critical to achieving broader development targets, not only in Nigeria but across Africa.

The visit, which highlighted the shared resolve of the UN and DEPOWA to drive change, ended with renewed commitments to work together in promoting initiatives that empower women, uplift families, and build a more resilient Nigerian society.
