Tinubu Orders Overhaul of Katsina Security Operation, Hints at State Police

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the federal government is considering the establishment of state police as part of efforts to address worsening insecurity in parts of the country, including Katsina State, which has witnessed renewed bandit attacks.

The President disclosed this yesterday when he received a delegation of eminent citizens of Katsina State, led by Governor Dikko Radda, at the State House, Abuja.

He explained that while the idea of state police has been politicised in the past, prevailing security realities now require bold reforms that would allow locally driven outfits to play a complementary role in policing.

“I am reviewing all aspects of security. I have to create state police. We are looking at that holistically,” Tinubu said. “The exigencies of security in some states will require deployment of outfits that understand the terrain and culture of the people, and can easily network at the grassroots.”

The President also ordered a comprehensive review of ongoing security operations in Katsina and directed security chiefs to submit daily reports on progress. He revealed that additional drones and surveillance gadgets have been approved to strengthen the fight against bandits in forests and border communities.

“The security challenges we are facing are surmountable. Yes, we have porous borders, and we inherited weaknesses that could have been addressed earlier. But this is a challenge we must fix, and we are facing it. I have today directed all the security agencies to energise further and look at the strategies,” Tinubu stated.

The President further said recently deployed forest guards will be better equipped and integrated into the broader security framework to ensure early warning and rapid response to attacks.

Governor Radda, in his remarks, thanked Tinubu for prioritising the state in federal appointments and infrastructure projects, but appealed for more support in the areas of security, youth empowerment, and development projects.

Former Governor Aminu Masari also spoke, commending the President for granting Katsina a special place in national affairs and for honouring the late President Muhammadu Buhari with what he described as a “true state funeral.”

The President assured the delegation that Buhari’s legacy would be immortalised, adding that the government’s priority remains to protect lives, livelihoods, and Nigeria’s future.

“We must protect our children, our people, our livelihood, our places of worship, and our recreational spaces. They can’t intimidate us,” Tinubu added.
