FCT Police Warn Residents Against Bribing Traffic Officers

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has cautioned motorists against offering bribes to traffic officers, describing the act as unlawful and harmful to road safety.

The advisory, posted on the command’s official X handle, carried a message from Commissioner of Police Ajao S. Adewale urging residents to respect traffic rules and cooperate with officers.

“Offering money or inducements to officers is not only inappropriate but unlawful,” Adewale stated in a September 6 post.

A follow-up message on September 7 warned that such practices undermine professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. “It is unlawful to give our officers money or any form of inducement while they are performing their duty. Let them discharge their responsibilities diligently, without interference,” the statement read. Emergency contacts and reporting lines were also shared for residents to report misconduct.

The warning comes on the heels of Operation Keep Traffic Flowing, launched by Adewale on August 31 to ease congestion across Abuja. The initiative deploys officers to 30 traffic hotspots—including Wuse, Area 1 Roundabout, Karu, Kubwa, and AYA—to clear obstructions, check one-way driving, and stop illegal passenger pick-ups.

At a lecture for traffic personnel, Adewale condemned unprofessional conduct such as forcefully entering vehicles or grabbing steering wheels, calling the behaviours dangerous and unacceptable. He stressed that officers who flout professional standards would face arrest and disciplinary measures, with a surveillance team now deployed to ensure compliance.

Reassuring residents of sustained police visibility at major intersections, the commissioner said: “The police are not adversaries; we are partners in progress.” He encouraged citizens to promptly report misconduct and support efforts to make Abuja’s roads safer.
