Northern Youth Coalition Defends Senator Buba, Condemns Smear Campaigns
The Coalition of Northern Youths Consultative Movement (CNYCM) has issued a strong statement defending Senator Shehu Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, against what it describes as a politically motivated smear campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release signed by National Coordinator Comrade Yusuf Musa Audu and National Secretary Bilal Galadima, the coalition condemned the circulation of fabricated audios, images, and videos falsely portraying Senator Buba as sympathetic to terrorist groups. The group described the materials as “clumsy,” “malicious,” and “a desperate attempt to misrepresent a patriotic leader.”
“These baseless attacks are being orchestrated by faceless groups and ethnoreligious bigots who are threatened by Senator Buba’s rising influence and his commitment to peace and national development,” the statement read.

The coalition also criticized calls for a review of Senator Buba’s leadership of the Senate Committee, describing such moves as distractions from the urgent task of addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. “The Senate is not a playground for jobless petition writers,” the group stated, urging political actors to focus on constructive engagement rather than character assassination.
Senator Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District, has been widely recognized for his advocacy of non-kinetic approaches to complement military operations in combating insecurity. His strategy emphasizes dialogue, reconciliation, and socio-economic renewal—principles rooted in his academic background in Peace Studies and Conflict Management. He is currently pursuing a PhD focused on the drivers of banditry in Zamfara and Kaduna States.
The coalition highlighted Buba’s involvement in government-backed negotiations with religious and community leaders, as well as his local interventions in Bauchi, including food distribution, fertilizer support, and skill acquisition programs. He has also called for the revival of key industries to address unemployment and hunger—factors that contribute to insecurity.
CNYCM urged the public to disregard the defamatory content and called on media platforms to investigate and remove such materials. The group announced plans to pursue legal action against those responsible for producing and circulating the fake videos.
“Senator Buba’s leadership is a model of evidence-based governance,” the statement concluded. “We call on all Nigerians to rise above political distractions and work together for a safer, more united nation.”
