CCC Urges Young Communicators to Seek Real-World Experience

Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), Chairman of the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), has emphasized the critical importance of practical, hands-on training for the next generation of communication professionals. He stated that classroom theory alone is insufficient without the grounding of real-life experience.

The former Director of Defence Information made the call during an interactive session with student interns at the PRNigeria Centre in Abuja, where he commended the organization’s intensive internship and fellowship programs.

Addressing the young trainees, Gen. Olukolade described their opportunity at PRNigeria as a “rare privilege” that positions them for excellence in future careers in journalism, public relations, and strategic communication.

“One thing is to learn the theories in the class and another to learn practically from the reality on the ground from the experts, specialists, their stakeholders and clients,” Olukolade stated.

“Not many of your peers have this privilege,” he continued. “In terms of acquiring knowledge, understanding, and exposure, I don’t think your peers can surpass you. The nation needs you at this time when we are redirecting our understanding of communication and its impact on society. With your training, you now have what it takes to make your mark.”

The retired General also praised the proprietor of PRNigeria, Yushau Shuaib, for his pivotal role in mentoring young talent. He humorously recalled a recent event where Shuaib was referred to by the Yoruba honorific, “Baba Elewe,”—a title for one who nurtures and cares for the young.

“Indeed, he deserves that title for the way he has impacted the careers of the young ones and his service for those in and outside the service,” Olukolade added.

The sentiment of gratitude was echoed by the interns. On their behalf, Hanniel Noboh thanked General Olukolade and the PRNigeria Centre for their guidance and encouragement.

“This is a little push for us as PRNigeria interns,” Noboh said. “As we return to school in the coming weeks, we will put into good use all the knowledge we’ve gained here. Thank you for paving the way for us, even in the face of obstacles.”

The event concluded with applause and goodwill messages for the outgoing interns, with a consensus that the rigorous training had equipped them for greater roles in the dynamic field of communication.
